What small business owners need to know about Medicare now

If you’re a small business owner, whether you’re approaching the age you can sign up for Medicare – 65 – or already on Medicare, now’s the time to think about your choice of Medicare plans and think carefully. There’s all kinds of terms that sound the same – Medicare, Medigap, Medicare Advantage, Supplemental plans, and on and on. This article helps explain each of these.

Each year, Medicare health and drug plans can change things like cost, coverage, and what providers and pharmacies are in their networks. There are a few new features for 2024, including a lower out-of-pocket cost limit for some patients taking expensive drugs. During open enrollment, people with Medicare can change their health plans and prescription drug coverage for the following year to better meet their needs – whether dictated by health changes, finances, or something else.

Latest survey projects 5.2% increase in health benefits costs in 2024

Employers expect a sharp increase of 5.2% in the average per-employee cost of employer-sponsored health insurance in 2024, according to a recent report. In 2022, cost rose by 3.2%, well below general inflation, which averaged 8% that year, according to Mercer. Because healthcare providers typically have multi-year contracts with health plans, employers did not feel the full brunt of inflation last year, it notes.
